So, as I mentioned last time, we took a hit, square in the face and it hurt. We as a department are in the process of rebuilding our reputation. We have developed some solid plans for the future and are on our way to a brighter place.
So what now Chief?
What are you going to do?
Well, I will tell you! Exactly what I want!!! I want teams to solve problems. I want progress. I want a better level of service. I want us to be a model in the community! That’s what I want!!
One of the biggest things I found out was that I was to “nice”. That I needed to be more of an a’hole to get things done. I think they may be right. If I hadn’t been so “soft”, maybe this situation wouldn’t have gained so much traction.
I had always believed that problems in the department should be solved from the ground up, but as I learned, some problems have to be handled from the top. Now I know that some of you will say that is management 101 but I have seen organic problem solving work. It’s a beautiful thing when it does, as long as the group has all the tools they need to solve problems.
So off we go on our new journey. We have a plan, we have strategies and we are putting teams together to get shit done.
SO now I ask myself, what now Chief? What are you going to do to be the best you can be to this group of passionate people. When something like this happens, you need to take a hard look into the mirror and ask what you can do to be better. I did that and it was hard. I thought I had it together but soon realized that I need to fix things about myself to be able to fix the group.
